Frieda's easy whiskey sours

My mother loved to entertain. She had many friends and a large extended family, was a talented cook, and made everyone feel welcome. The last years of her life, she used a wheelchair, and as her mobility declined she became adept at planning ahead and making everything as easy for herself as possible. I've always thought she could have launched the space shuttle, if she'd wanted.

One easy trick for great entertaining is to serve a few extra special things, like serving a signature cocktail as guests arrive. This doesn't mean any of these items need to take a lot of time. Lemonade concentrate is lemon juice and sugar, a tastier substitute for sour mix.

  • 6 ounces frozen lemonade concentrate (the small can, or half a large)
  • 9 ounces whiskey
  • 3 ounces cold water

Gently mix the concentrate in the can before measuring until it's a uniform consistency. In a pitcher, stir together the lemonade concentrate, whiskey and water. Taste and adjust water and whiskey balance.

Serve in a rocks glass over ice. Mom would pass a tray of pre-poured cocktails; I usually let guests serve themselves.

Will keep for a few days in the refrigerator.
