Martini

First, let us remember that "martini" is not a synonym for "cocktail." A martini is a specific base liquor (gin, not vodka) with a secondary ingredient (white, aka dry, vermouth). The original white vermouth is Noilly Prat, and the original ratio is 2:1. I do like a drier martini, but not completely dry.

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1/4 to 1 ounce Noilly Prat or other white vermouth

Stir with ice until very very cold. Pour into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or skewered olive.

Substitute a cocktail onion for the garnish and you have a gibson.

Pour in some olive juice for a dirty martini.
